Behind the Lens: Unveiling the Process of Creating Commercial Photos

Have you ever marvelled at the exquisite beauty of a commercial photo and wondered about the journey it took to reach that polished perfection? Allow me to peel back the curtain and walk you through the intricate process behind crafting a premium-looking image, using the example of a simple pen.

Pre-production: Setting the Stage

Before the shutter clicks, meticulous planning takes center stage. It all begins with understanding the essence of the photo and its intended message. For our pen photo, the goal was to showcase its premium quality on a stage-like setup. Armed with this vision, I sketched out a basic composition, guiding the direction of the final image.

Drawing on a decade of photography experience, I crafted a lighting diagram tailored to accentuate the pen's material, highlight its logo, and evoke that coveted stage presence. Attention to detail extends to identifying and sourcing materials, backgrounds, and props, ensuring a seamless execution on the shoot day. Anticipating the need for flexibility, I opted for a black background, leaving room to experiment with a blue hue in post-production.

Production: Bringing the Vision to Life

With preparations in place, it's time to breathe life into the image. Armed with a clear blueprint from the pre-production phase, I set the stage, arranging lighting and positioning the pen within the frame. The initial shot serves as a canvas for refinement, where improvisation and adjustment refine the composition until it aligns with the desired outcome.

Smooth sailing during production owes much to the groundwork laid in pre-production. By anticipating challenges and crafting a detailed plan, each shot becomes a step closer to realizing the envisioned masterpiece.

Post-production: The Finishing Touches

In the digital darkroom, the magic unfolds. Selected shots undergo meticulous editing, addressing imperfections and enhancing visual impact. Here, the foresight of shooting on a black background pays dividends, as the transition to a vibrant blue background seamlessly ties the elements together, elevating the image to its full potential.

Conclusion: Beyond the Shutter Button

Contrary to popular belief, the creation of a stunning commercial photo extends far beyond the act of pressing a button. It's a symphony of planning, execution, and refinement, where each phase plays an indispensable role in shaping the final masterpiece. As a commercial photographer, it's not just about capturing moments—it's about crafting experiences that captivate and inspire.

Next time you admire a flawless commercial photo, take a moment to appreciate the intricate process that brought it to life. It's a testament to the artistry and dedication that define the world of professional photography.
